Jelenetfotó 1.5In Mexico and much of Latin America a girls fifteenth birthday has recently been marked by the ‘Quinceañera’ celebration in which girls dress in elaborate ball gowns and are made up to mark their transition from childhood to being women. This extravagant fiesta is a lived illusion in which the reality of daily life is shrugged aside. The quinceañera herself spends the day as a princess but the party is a daydream shared by the whole community. In Tetlanohcan, a rapidly urbanising agricultural town in Tlaxcala, Central Mexico we are invited to join in the daydream of the Quinceañera. ‘Tiempo de Vals’ combines observational footage of preparations and the party itself with oral testimony from three generations of women to explore meaning of this new tradition in the context of a globalising economy. The scenes of fantasy and illusion are juxtaposed with images of the social and economic reality of the town. Hard work in the ‘maquilladora’ factories of Tlaxcala and the daily grind for those working as illegal immigrants in the USA bring a bitter edge to the saccharin taste of the celebrations.
