Jelenetfotó 8.8During the night from June 3rd – 4th 1989 the Chinese People’s Liberation Army opened fire on a defenceless crowd of people. For weeks beforehand, up to one million people had been staging a protest in Tiananmen Square – the Chinese name for this vast open space in the centre of Beijing. It was above all students who were campaigning for the democratisation of China. What’s less well known is that workers and ‘ordinary’ members of the public also took part in the demonstrations. Even today, there are still no reliable figures as to the number of people killed. Human rights groups estimate that there were 3,000 dead: crushed by tanks, shot by firing squads. 20 years on, there have been a lot of changes in China. The Middle Kingdom has experienced extraordinary economic growth. But many of the problems from back then have not gone away. And the demonstrators of two decades ago are still defamed, persecuted and discriminated against. They are regarded as counter-revolutionaries.
