Jelenetfotó 1.2"Labrador Jannies" (2005), 22min, is a depiction of a midwinter house-visiting custom performed by disguised villagers in southern coastal Labrador, Canada, who are known locally as "Jannies". The film begins with establishing shots of the village of Mary's Harbour by day. There then follow excerpts from interviews with half-a-dozen local people who have participated in the custom as hosts or as jannies themselves. This is followed by shots of people "jannying-up", or putting on their disguises of bedsheets, masks, heavy clothes etc. We then follow a group of jannies as they make their house visits to four houses (and another one they are refused entry to). We see the fun that the hosts have in trying to guess the identity of their visitors, the pleasure the jannies take in prolonging the guessing game, the rum and cakes that are offered following successful identification, and the trips through the snow to the next house. The film ends with excerpts of a singing session that took place at the last house of the evening. (‘Labrador’ is part of Canada, and ‘Jannies’ are disguised midwinter house-visitors.)
