Through the last millenium the Aromanian Vlach culture blossomed in the nervures of the Balkans. They were riding in peril and comfort, aggression and delight the high peaks of the region. As nomad shepherds, caravans' guards and merchants, prosperous and cosmopolitan, handling the divers languages and cultures welcomed by the Balkans, they were providing the pastoralist and commercial necessities between different parts of South-East Europe ( Trieste , Venice , Vienna, Budapest , Bucharest , Belgrade , Athens , Istanbul ). Forgotten in the core of the south Albanian mountains, Grabova (1700 m altitude) is the most inaccessible of the 5, once flourishing, Moscopolitan cities. The last 300 years of Balkan inter-cultural relations challenged this historical urban network to keep alive its Aromanian Vlach culture. In our days this challenge transformed Grabova in one demographic winner: 50 families. Its destiny is most representative for the Aromanian Vlach culture and settlements, just as for enough other Balkan wide comparable situations.
